"Sebastian, before or after" (2023) by Anthony Cudahy acquired by the Speed Art Museum in Kentucky

GRIMM is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of Anthony Cudahy's Sebastian, before or after (2023) by the Speed Art Museum, Louisville, KY (US).

Cudahy’s figurative paintings piece together enigmatic scenes of specific objects and equivocal environments from interwoven references drawn from Queer archives, art history, film, poetry, friends, and his own autobiography. His fluid application of paint and idiosyncratic palette—at moments sullen, earthen, corporeal and at others high-key, acidic, artificial—animates the ongoing push and pull between the real and surreal across his practice. Through his art, Cudahy explores the hazy slippages of subjectivity in the digital age.

The acquisition is made possible with funds generously donated by the Green Family Art Foundation and Anonymous, through the gift of Speed Contemporary, and through funds generously donated by Woo Speed McNaughton, Sara and James Haynes, Sally and Stanley Macdonald, Dr. Jeffrey and Mrs. Susan Callen, Lopa and Rishabh Mehrotra, Nick and Ursula Melhuish, and Ruth Simons.
