Robert Zandvliet: Aan de oevers van de tijd
The Fries Museum began collecting Robert Zandvliet’s work at an early stage and brings his oeuvre back into focus with this comprehensive retrospective. The exhibition begins with works from the museum’s collection and ends with new paintings from the artist’s studio.
Robert Zandvliet’s oeuvre is characterized by his search for the essence of the image. With his confident and direct painterly style, he operates in the tension field between figuration and abstraction. Zandvliet made his debut in the 1990s with a series of monumental paintings of everyday objects: a rearview mirror, a cinema screen, a hairpin. The clean lines of these objects later evolve into road networks and landscapes, a theme that has since formed a recurring thread throughout his work. This exhibition presents his development over the past 30 years.
The exhibition is developed in collaboration with the AkzoNobel Art Foundation, Amsterdam (NL), which is a leading platform for international contemporary art. The foundation has followed Robert Zandvliet’s work since the beginning of his career and holds a substantial number of his works in its collection. Approximately half of the works in the exhibition have been made available on loan.
