Charles Avery: The Hunter’s return, Friesland Triennial, Paradys, curated by Hans den Hartog Jager
View works

You might think of Charles Avery as a sort of explorer. For more than fifteen years he has been working on his project The Islanders, a well thought-out fantasy world around a fictional island and its inhabitants. He maps this island with drawings, texts, video, objects and installations, and it evolves further with each subsequent work. Avery calls his island “a gym for the imagination”.

The Islanders is not an utopia. The island holds up a mirror to us in various ways, with all our flaws and idiosyncrasies. For example, the endless philosophical discussion going on on the island is a humorous reference to the practice of philosophy and the island's relationship with its former ruler Triangland can be read as a political metaphor.

For Paradys, The Islanders continues to grow. In a fairytale solo exhibition, Avery takes us to the Islanders character 'The Hunter', the guiding principle of his very first book.
