Miguel Ybáñez: Arqueología Emocional

GRIMM is pleased to announce ‘Arqueología Emocional’ an exhibition of new work by the Spanish artist Miguel Ybáñez (1946).

Throughout his career, Miguel Ybáñez sought to avoid any imposed restriction. Ybáñez rejected early on the conventional high-low art dichotomy that he was taught in the conservative Spain of the 60’s and the concept of the artist as creator and inventor of an individual idea. At the age of 36, he left Spain for the Netherlands in search of new challenges. His attitude towards the artist as creator finds a close resemblance to the ideology of Andre Breton as defined in his ‘Manifeste du surréalisme’:

“Pure psychic automatism by which it is intended to express, either verbally or in writing, or otherwise, the true function of thought. Thought dictated in the absence of all control exerted by reason, and outside all aesthetic or moral preoccupations.”
