Saskia Noor van Imhoff’s installation ‘Indicator Indicator’ (2023), is part of the exhibition ’Seeds of Memory’ at the Fries Museum, Leeuwarde (NL), 15 April 2023 – 24 March 2024.
Van Imhoff is interested in how collections select and classify knowledge. She surveys what is preserved and what is forgotten. Her assemblages, objects and collected fragments reveal connections between conservation and cultivation, culture and nature, the organic and the artificial. By creating new situations, Van Imhoff reactivates these collections of objects and images.
For the exhibition ’Seeds of Memory', Van Imhoff developed an installation as part of her ongoing research: an organic collection, an ecosystem in itself. ‘Indicator Indicator’ is rooted in Van Imhoff’s own lift: her 19th century farmhouse, the countryside and her studio in Gaasterland (NL). Among other things, she examined the growth patterns of the farm’s wooden trusses and she traced their place of origin, making them an example of how materials can be repositories of memories.
