This work draws from the design of Donald Judd’s Corner Bench, recreated in plexiglass as a kind of vitrine housing found objects cast in aluminum. The objects within – cast from stalks of amaranth, a foam corner and a broken handle – are placed neutrally alongside one another to create the appearance of their natural association. Van Imhoff’s practice of re-contextualizing objects in unexpected ways, contrasts the distinction often made between artworks and the surroundings that comprise their display. In "#+40.06", Van Imhoff responds to the hybridity of the bench’s design, calling attention to the way in which it can be further removed from its originalpurpose, yet remain a “functional object”.
