GRIMM presents
Caroline Walker | Nearby
25 March - 1 May 2021
54 White Street, New York, NY (US) -
Walker's new series of paintings chart her immediate surroundings and tell the story of her local area. She explores the boundary between being an observer - that is preserving the "objective" eye of an outsider - and magnifying the experience of a place which has become part of the fabric of her life. The exhibition will be Walker's fourth solo presentation at the gallery and the inaugural solo exhibition at GRIMM's new Tribeca space in New York, NY (US).

The artist's subjects include a neighbor working in her garden, the local dry cleaner and a pharmacy sales assistant, all of whom are connected within a discrete area of the sprawling London metropolis. She describes small movements of daily existence and encapsulates the corners of life which are often overlooked but nonetheless vital, written and erased from history with the passing of time. They also serve as a kind of self-portrait by recording the artist’s journey through the places she frequents.

In a group of paintings depicting Walker’s neighborhood bakery, amber light permeates the interior of the space as women perform various routines duties, each of them inwardly directed. The intimate postures of the women working together, and individually, tell a vivid story; it is in these moments that the complexities of their lives filter through to the surface and coalesce in images that both fulfill the senses and speak to poignant moments of human experience
-
Walker has received wide acclaim for her portrayals of women as works of social commentary, but it is her ability to distil viewpoints from familiar settings and her talent as a colorist that first impact viewers of her works. As with her previous series, these paintings capture a distinct sense of place and time. They balance a pervasive sense of isolation and references to the current moment, with displays of formal innovation.
