Norbert Schwontkowski attended Hochschule für Gestaltung in Bremen (DE), and later became a professor of painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künst at Hamburg (DE). Recent shows include: Café Real, Galerie Jahn and Jahn, Munich (DE) in 2021, Everyone Wants to Go Home, Kunstmuseum, The Hague (NL) in 2020, Some of my Secrets, Kunsthalle, Bremen (DE) in 2019. His sparse and illustrative works carry a vast array of memory and narrative. Mixing his pigments by hand directly onto the canvas, his paintings carry the atmospheric haze of charrished, mournful naivety. Accompanying his works with an avid journaling practice, Schwontkowski shows us the humorous moments of a quiet existence, where the mundane is transformed into the fantastic and thoughts become delocalized to ask broader questions about the human experience.
Norbert Schwontkowski's work is included in the exhibition Condition Humaine, October 29 - December 4, 2021. For more information about the artist please vist Mitchell-Innes & Nash.
