In September 2026, Caroline Walker will present a large-scale commission for Art on the Underground at Stratford station. Renowned for her figurative paintings depicting the lived experience of women, Walker has received wide acclaim for her large-scale works capturing the everyday lives of women, both at work and leisure. The diversity of her subjects often lends itself to creating a social commentary where the complexities of her subjects’ lives are filtered through to the surface and coalesce in images that both fulfil the senses and speak to poignant moments of human experience.
Since its conception in 2000, Transport for London’s Art on the Underground programme has been at the forefront of critically engaged programming that reflects on the changing nature of public space, challenging the idea that public art is fixed. For her commission, Walker will explore the often invisible labour of women working on TfL’s networks at night. This new work for Stratford station will illuminate the Underground’s 24-hour workforce and the women whose unseen labour keeps the network running.
