"Entrusos en sus tierras" (2024) by Claudia Martínez Garay acquired by the ING Collection, Amsterdam

Grimm is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of Claudia Martínez Garay's Entrusos en sus tierras (2024) by the ING Collection, Amsterdam (NL).

Martínez Garay is interested in how artefacts, cultural relics, and propaganda communicate the history and social-political memory of cultures. The artist seeks to challenge the persistence of colonialist frameworks and official narratives informing our understanding of the pre-Columbian cultures.

Martínez Garay borrows from the aesthetics of state-sanctioned school textbooks, a tool for nationalist propaganda, to challenge the supposed objectivity of official accounts of history. The contrast between the colours brown and white is a recurring motif in this series – this chromatic strategy highlights the presence of the brown body in the gallery space.
Intrusos en sus tierras was commissioned by Dundee Contemporary Arts (UK) in 2024 and featured as part of the artist's solo exhibition, Every seed is awakened, held at the venue.
