Dirk Braeckman to present a solo exhibition 'Echtzeit' at FOMU, Antwerp (BE)

FOMU in Antwerp will present Echtzeit, a solo exhibition by Dirk Braeckman opening on Saturday 29 March, marking the artist’s first series of works created in response to an existing museum collection.

Braeckman has been researching the medium of photography and producing distinctively subtle, dark images for more than forty years. For Echtzeit, he enters into dialogue with the FOMU collection. Making a very personal selection of pieces from FOMU, Braeckman has created a series of new works through which visitors can experience the collection through his camera, eyes and hands.

Braeckman is interested in imperfections, empty interiors, banal objects, suggestive places or objects that leave much to the imagination. From the FOMU collection he has selected functional photos, made without artistic ambition but in which he sees visual qualities. Braeckman prints, paints onto, cuts into and further edits each photograph, removing its original context and shifting the meaning of the work. A functional document turns into an artistic photo, a timeless visual poem that raises more questions than offers answers.
