Louise Giovanelli to present major museum exhibition in China in 2024

We are delighted to announce 'Louise Giovanelli - Paintings 2019-2024’ a major museum exhibition for the Manchester-based artist at the He Art Museum (HEM) in China opening from 23 March - 16 June.

Drawing inspiration from a variety of sources from Reniassance art to vintage film stills, Giovanelli often focuses on the staging of rituals and performances. Relating the contemporary to the historic, and the sacred to the profane, she considers the significance and history of painting as a system of representation, exposing how the materiality of paint can carry and convey meaning.

Deftly manipulating light and form, Giovanelli's multivalent imagery reminds us that the classical foundations of painting remain sources of delight and innovation. Her jewelled palette and tightly framed scenes compel us to linger on the image, slowing down the act of looking to something close to a meditative encounter, and focusing on the detail, texture and painterly quality of the work, dissolving representation into carefully crafted textures and patterns.

Located in Shunde, Foshan, Guangdong, HEM is a family established, non-profit private art museum designed by Tadao Ando.
