This work reflects Japanese beliefs about the afterlife. In this tradition, food and offerings are placed for the gods. The painting is divided into two realms: Above, representing the afterlife, the food appears blackened and decayed. Below, the earthly realm shows the daily reality in Peru; food tied in plastic bags, hanging from the ceiling. A couple lies in bed, with one figure seemingly returning from the afterlife to be with their partner. It poignantly depicts the intertwining of life and death in combination with the Japanese belief.
