Matthias Weischer: With Wolfram Ebersbach
Marburger Kunstverein presents an exhibition with Matthias Weischer (b. 1973) and Wolfram Ebersbach (b. 1943), who were student and teacher at the Leipzig Academy in Germany. An opening reception will be held on Friday, 19 April at 6 pm with an introduction by Dr. Karlheinz Lüdeking.
Light, space, and perspective serve as the common denominators between these two artists, opening and sustaining a new dialogue between their work. Today, Weischer and Ebersbach are primarily representatives of different worlds of experience in their specific implementations of painting.
Matthias Weischer initially deals with interiors: references to art history, interior design, and life that comes and goes with fashion and time. Intimacy and magic, set pieces and quotes, some of which only exist as a hint of a memory, enchant in a slightly surreal way.
During the years of reunification, Ebersbach reduced his color palette almost exclusively to black and white. He reveals an existentialist experience that manifests itself in his imagery of Leipzig–train stations, passages, and atriums–where architectural details are added later. Documenting this moment of monumental transition in Leipzig, Ebersbach also captures his own changing perspective of the city.
Weischer is included in the group exhibition Self-Portraits at GRIMM, Amsterdam (NL) on view from 13 April to 25 May 2024.
