The mobility of thought becomes visible to the public in two stop-motion films of ever-changing paintings. In "L’histoire kaputt", the world, or our perception of it, slips into a stream of people, animals, plants, vistas and views of rooms, including death chambers. Everything is liquid like paint; the opposite of nailed decor.
“But film and painting”, says Van Warmerdam “I don’t contrast that way. What is liberating about this way of painting is the distance from the easel; of the donkey painting. They are films about painting itself. The brush and paint take me from one thing to another. Nothing needs to be finalized. Because that is further on. After that. And after that. And after that. I am constantly on the move. Free as a bird.”
