Info

GRIMM is pleased to announce Summers’ Ego, an exhibition of new paintings by Alex Dordoy at our Keizersgracht location in Amsterdam. This is the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery and his fifth solo presentation in Amsterdam.

Alex Dordoy creates images that question the mechanisms of visual attractionThe artist uses advertisements from the 1920’s and 1930’s as source material which he strips down and re-contextualizes through the manipulation of pictures and textThe romanticism of the images he chooses is contrasted by the vibrant, unnatural colors he gives his subject matter. An aura of romanticism and nostalgia delicately persists, underpinned by the painter’s precise, graphic rendering.

Opening: Thursday October 18, 5-8pm

Artists

Alex Dordoy

Alex Dordoy (1985, Newcastle, UK) is fascinated by ‘the disconnect’ between the physical and the virtual, the real and the what-could-have-been. Dordoy edits and manipulates existing objects, photographs, images and patterns using photoshop after which he develops them into paintings or sculptures in plaster, silicone or jesmonite. He explores how objects can invoke associations at different times and in different contexts, thereby acquiring a new meaning.
