Caroline Walker is a London-based artist whose paintings capture moments of quiet and solitude in the lives of women from various walks of life. Walker’s painting included in this presentation and the accompanying oil sketch, depict two women named Elaine, essential workers at a bakery. Walker uses a documentarian approach, focusing on women as they are engaged in work, with a particular focus on the kind that often goes unacknowledged. Here she celebrates these women among many essential workers, who goes about her daily activities seeing that others get their coffee, bread, and pastries.

Upcoming solo presentations in 2021 include a museum exhibition at the Midlands Art Centre, Birmingham (UK) as well as at GRIMM New York (US). Currently Walker’s paintings are on display at Ingleby Gallery in Edinburgh (UK). Past exhibitions have been presented at GRIMM, Amsterdam (NL); Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge (UK); Anat Ebgi, Los Angeles, CA (US); Space K, Gwacheon (KR); Victoria Miro Gallery in London (UK); Whitechapel Gallery, London (UK); ARTUNER, Palazzo Capris, Turin (IT); and the 2014 Milan Triennale (IT) among others.

The work 'Elaine and Elaine' is the subject of a large-scale banner currently on display at the Southbank Centre in London, which coincides with the artist's group exhibition, 'Everyday Heroes' on view at Hayward Gallery until 30 November, 2020.
