After encountering a 1200-year-old ceramic vase representing a Moche prisoner just before he is about to be sacrificed at the Ethnological Museum of Berlin, the artist started speculating on the history of the artifact and the person that it depicts. The Moche civilization (c. 100 - 700 AD) believed in the afterlife, and the video “ÑUQA KAUSAKUSAQ QHEPAYKITAPAS/ I WILL OUTLIVE YOU” is an exploration into the character of the prisoner over time. In his monologue the prisoner reflects on the time before his death when he is literally incarcerated, to his experience as a metaphorical prisoner in a museum display, to being part of an artwork.
