The geometry of this structure is such that it occupies two planes. If you follow the top side of the sculpture, it curves to become the outer edge on the “short” sides. From above the Henge appears as a rectangle, hence the title Untitled (Design for the Square Circle, Henge). The square circle is a reappearing place name in Avery’s work, and you can see a poster for this site in Avery’s drawings (pasted on the city wall). Avery imagines the Henge as a multifunctional structure: A temple, a stadium, the entrance to a shopping center, or a monument. In the Untitled (Design for the Square Circle, Henge) the Henge is place on a vast plane, which Avery calls a “holding area” until he has decided where it will be located on the Island.
